Super-fast molds on demand: CASTFAST for foundries

Foundries can now experience the many advantages of the patternless casting process with CASTFAST - without having to invest in their own 3D sand printers. Aluminum, iron and steel foundries can order 3D-printed sand molds online and then cast them in-house.

Many foundries have already invested in 3D sand printing to significantly speed up the production of castings – especially one-offs, small batches or start-up series – by skipping the time-consuming and expensive pattern-making process.

For foundries that do not yet have a 3D sand printer, CASTFAST offers the possibility to order only the molds and/or cores via the CASTFAST platform, using a simple form with immediate display of a quote price and estimated delivery date. Click here for our calculator →

We founded CASTFAST to provide casting buyers with a better, faster and more digital way to source high-quality castings. However, our team quickly saw an unexpectedly high number of inquiries from foundries interested in purchasing sand molds.

Marcel Tschillaev, Product Manager at CASTFAST, explains:

“Our mission at CASTFAST is to accelerate the adoption of 3D sand printing by small and medium-sized foundries and revolutionize access to high-quality castings. The patternless process enabled by sand printing is exactly what the foundry industry needs – and what buyers want. It offers agility, flexibility and precision and allows us to digitize parts of the foundry process that have never been digitized before.”

He goes on to explain:

“Ultimately, we want foundries to purchase a printer themselves and become part of the CASTFAST ecosystem. But for foundries that are not yet ready to invest in their own 3D printing production, buying 3D printed sand molds is a great way to benefit from the speed and freedom of the patternless process. It can make the difference between being able to fulfill an order or not.”

Printed casting: how does it work?

The “printed casting” process, also known as “3D sand printing”, does not require a model at all. Sand molds are “printed” by selectively binding layers of sand. The mold is built up layer by layer – based on a 3D print file that can be created from drawings. The process is faster than conventional methods with a permanent model and more precise than other fast alternatives such as full mold casting and is also technically superior to the latter.

Foundries interested in purchasing a sand mold or core can securely upload a 3D drawing of the part they need or simply provide the rough dimensions to get an instant quote and delivery timeframe to start ordering.

Our team then works with the foundry to design the mold along with the sprue system, risers and any other mold parts required. The molds are then printed (currently in Mainz, Germany) and sent out for casting.

Marcel Tschillaev on the pleasant side effects of trying things out:

“We help foundries to plan the molds for 3D sand printing in their CAD systems according to their specifications and individual requirements. We give them tools and tips and show them what to consider and what not to worry about. This makes the first order of a printed sand mold a first-class learning experience for foundries and immediately gives their foundrymen a better understanding of the possibilities of 3D sand printing.”
